The 6 Best Things About Working in Sales

Salespeople make up one of the biggest segments of the workplace, with estimates putting the total percentage of employees who are in a sales role at between 13 and 17 percent of the overall workforce. And as many of us know, sales can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling career, despite its inherent challenges.

We’ve come up with a list of the best things about working in sales to remind our audience why this profession is unlike any other.

1. Money, money, money

Let’s face it, lots people go into sales because it gives them an opportunity to make more money than they can make in any other job. And in most cases, their decision pays off. Salespeople oftentimes make more than anyone in their company, with the exception of executives.

If you want to provide for your family and achieve your financial dreams, there are very few better options than going into sales.

2. Job security

You might not think so, but sales offers some of the best possible job security out there. Of course, sales also has a very high turnover rate, but the fact that every company in the world needs a salesforce ensures that a competent sales professional can always find work, no matter the state of the economy.

Additionally, a high-performing salesperson is such an asset to any well-run organization that they’ll be the last ones to go in the event of a downturn.

3. The thrill of the chase

Closing a deal feels amazing, but when you start actually enjoying the challenge of the sales process is when you know you’re truly a salesperson. Prospecting, overcoming objections, and solving problems are the core competencies of a sales rep.

Embracing the grind can not only help your overall mood but it will help you close more deals. The thrill is in the chase just as much as in the kill.

4. Control of your destiny

Besides becoming an entrepreneur, there’s no other job that allows you to have as much control over your destiny as sales does. If you’re lazy and don’t want to push, then you won’t make much money. Conversely, if you’re motivated and hungry and can translate that into daily effort then you’ll make more money.

This isn’t for everyone of course, and many people prefer a steady paycheck, but those who love having no ceiling on their potential, love working in sales.

5. No two days are the same when you are working in sales

Some people want to show up at the office and fill out TPS reports for 8 hours a day and then go home and watch Game of thronesand that’s ok. But if you want to come to work every day and not know what to expect, then sales is the job for you.

Sales are lots of things, but boring isn’t one of them. Between the changing demands and the diverse clients that you come across, you’ll never experience two days that are the same.

6. The people

In sales, you’re likely to encounter a lot of interesting prospects, some of who will become your customers and friends. But it’s your coworkers who are likely to be the people that you have relationships with for the rest of your life, or who you will at least remember.

Sales attract colorful personalities and there’s nothing quite like a sales floor full of slightly crazy expert communicators.
